This is one of the most common questions we get at Alpine — for both skiing and snowboarding. The honest answer is: it depends. But it doesn't depend on as many factors as people think. Here's how we walk through the equipment decision with every customer who asks.
Ability level matters — but maybe not the way you think
The common assumption is that beginners should rent and advanced skiers and snowboarders should own. That's mostly true but not for the reason people assume.
Beginners should rent primarily because they don't know yet what they want. Equipment preferences are deeply personal — ski length, flex pattern, rocker profile, or board width, shape, and flex for snowboarders — and they develop over time on the mountain. Buying before you know your preferences means you won't know the way you like to ski or ride. Renting exposes you to different equipment and helps you figure out what works for your time on the hill. Questions like, do you like going faster? Making big turns? Spending time in the park? Are you looking to continue progressing? Those all factor into the buying decision and you need time on the slopes to know the answers.
Intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders benefit from owning for the opposite reason: they know what they want. Owning your own equipment means your gear is always tuned to your preferences, your bindings are set correctly, and your boots are molded to your feet. That consistency makes a real difference in performance.
Boots are the exception
If there's one piece of gear worth buying before anything else, it's boots. Boot fit is the single biggest factor in comfort and performance on the mountain, and no rental boot will ever fit the way a properly fitted boot that's been heat-molded to your foot fits. Even if you're not ready to invest in your own equipment, consider owning your own boots.
At Alpine, we offer a Boot Fit Guarantee: if we can't make your boots work for you, we'll replace them. That kind of fit is not possible with rental equipment.
The case for renting longer than you think
There's a strong argument for renting even after you've been skiing for a few years — specifically through our AdPlus Demo rental package. Demo skis are hand-selected from our retail wall, tuned before each rental, and span a wide range of current models. Skiing demos is how you figure out what you actually want to buy.
We've had customers who rented demos for two seasons before buying, and they consistently make better buying decisions because of it. They know exactly what they like, they've skied several different brands and shapes, and they're not guessing at what works for their skiing.
What to buy first
If you've decided it's time to invest, here's the order we'd recommend:
- Boots first. Always. Properly fitted, heat-molded boots make every other piece of gear work better.
- Skis or Snowboard. Buy based on the conditions you ski/ride the most — if you're mostly at local Southeastern resorts on groomed runs, your quiver looks different than if you're chasing powder days out west.
Whatever you decide, come talk to us. We've been helping people make this decision for nearly 50 years. We'll give you an honest answer based on your preference and experience.
